Latent Syphilis
Latent syphilis refers to the presence of untreated syphilis. The latent or hidden stage of syphilis begins when the symptoms of the secondary stage have resolved or with the disappearance of secondary symptoms. The disease remains in the body, and may begin to damage the internal organs, including the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints. This damage may be serious enough that can cause even death. Hence, treatment of syphilis is important regardless of what stage of the infection a person is in.
If treatment for syphilis is given during the latent stage the infection can be cured. However, if there has been heart or nervous-system damage before treatment is started this may be irreversible.
Tertiary Stage
Tertiary syphilis is a late phase of the sexually transmitted disease syphilis. Tertiary syphilis is the most destructive state but is less frequently seen today than in the past because of timely detection and availability of ayurvedic treatment to this effect.
Tertiary syphilis is the stage that succeeds secondary syphilis. This usually develops after more than 10 years and is often very serious. - Neurological problems - These may include stroke; infection and inflammation of the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis); poor muscle coordination; numbness; paralysis; deafness or visual problems; personality changes; and dementia.
- Cardiovascular problems - These may include bulging (aneurysm) and inflammation of the aorta - your body's major artery - and of other blood vessels. Syphilis may also cause valvular heart disease, such as aortic valve stenosis.
What are the Complications?
- Damage to major body systems, if left untreated.
- Serious infection and birth defects and even death in infected fetus or infant.
- Increases risk of getting HIV, if exposed, and spreading HIV, if infected.
How to Prevent?
- Abstain from unsafe sexual activity.
- Faithful marriage or mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner.
- Latex condoms, when used the right way all the time, reduce but do not eliminate the risk. Because sores can be in areas not covered by the condom, it is still possible to get syphilis, even when using a condom.
